Mt. Colden

My girlfriend Sam and I decided to tackle Mt. Colden during our annual Adirondacks trip this year.  For our route, we decided on Van Hoevenberg trail-->Marcy Dam-->Avalanche Pass-->Summit-->Lake Colden-->Marcy Dam-->Van Hoevenberg trail.  The trip description in our guide and the mileage on our map called this a 13.5 mile hike, but my pedometer clocked it in as 17 miles.  It was a beautiful, clear and cold day with some snow on the summits and a decent amount of ice on the trail at higher elevations.  We witnessed a couple who had to turn back because they neglected to bring microspikes--the wooden bridges around Avalanche Pass were covered with a thin layer of ice that made them deadly without spikes.  I wouldn't want to take a dunk in Avalanche Lake on a 20-degree morning.  The slabs towards Mt. Colden's summit were also icy, making the going a bit slow and technical, but spikes and gaiters kept us safe and dry.
